Over 60 boys from across Scotland had travelled to the events which would potentially identify a team to attend and represent Scotland in the National Set Work Championships in Newcastle towards the end of April.
Given the lack of seating facilities within the gymnastic hall, the spectators made use of every available space. This made for an electric atmosphere.
The boys worked steadily on all pieces of apparatus, making small errors, however, maximising their potential for the best possible score. The event was a test in the boy's ability to cope with compulsory set work and compete on all 6 pieces of apparatus. By the end of the day, all of the boys gave a good show of their abilities with Lee Perfect winning a Bronze medal in the Primary 4 In age category along with James Millar who also took the Bronze in the Primary 2 In age category. Well done to all the boys on great performances.
Scottish Regional and National Trials Bellahouston Centre, Glasgow
This year, the Men's Artistic discipline was represented by 4 gymnasts. Lee Perfect, Fraser Bisset and Craig Anderson in the Under 10 age group and James Millar in the Under 12 age group. There were over 70 boys from across Scotland attending the trial which would attempt to identify the top16 gymnasts for the National squad and 12 gymnasts for each Regional Squad
The trials were broken up into 2 parts. In the morning, the boys worked through the skills profile. The boys were required to perform specific skill on each piece of apparatus. In the afternoon, the boys worked on the physical norms, dynamic strength, power, endurance, static's and flexibility. The natures of the tests are to look at the gymnasts all round ability.
For the majority of the boys this was to be their first experience of attending the trial. However, they were not put off by the number of boys nor the length of time taken to assess each gymnast. In fact they were pleased to have gone through the experience and know what to expect next year.
The results of the trial are being collated and each gymnast will receive a report card detailing their efforts. This method of feedback will ensure that both gymnasts and coaches have a better understanding of potentials weaknesses and areas for future development.
